Lillehei, C(larence) Walton

American surgeon who in 1952 performed the first successful open-heart operation; he also helped develop the first wearable pacemaker and artificial heart valves (b. Oct. 23, 1918, Minneapolis, Minn. - d. July 5, 1999, St. Paul, Minn.).
